Jesus Foretells His Death

²¹From that point on, Jesus began explaining to his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem, where he would suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes. He told them he would be killed and then raised on the third day. ²²Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "Lord, may this never happen to you!" ²³But Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me. You're not thinking about things the way God does — you're thinking like a human being." ²⁴Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. ²⁵For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. ²⁶What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses his own soul? What could anyone offer in exchange for his soul? ²⁷The Son of Man will come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. ²⁸I tell you the truth: some of you standing here right now will not taste death before you see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
