Questions in the Temple

¹⁵After this, the Pharisees got together and plotted how to trap Jesus with his own words. ¹⁶They sent their disciples to him along with supporters of Herod. "Teacher," they said, "we know you're an honest man who teaches God's way truthfully. You don't play favorites or care about anyone's status. ¹⁷So tell us what you think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" ¹⁸But Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, "Why are you trying to tempt me, you hypocrites?" ¹⁹"Show me the coin used to pay the tax." They handed him a denarius. ²⁰"Whose image and inscription is on this?" he asked them. ²¹"Caesar's," they answered. Then Jesus said, "So give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God." ²²When they heard these words, they were amazed, and left him, and went away. ²³That same day, the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. ²⁴"Teacher," they said, "Moses taught that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children on his behalf. ²⁵Now, there were 7 brothers among us. The first one married and died without children, so his wife passed to his brother. ²⁶The same thing happened with the second brother, then the third, and so on through all 7. ²⁷Finally, the woman died too. ²⁸So here's our question: In the resurrection, whose wife will she be? After all, she was married to all 7 of them." ²⁹Jesus replied, "You are mistaken, because you don't understand the Scriptures or the power of God." ³⁰In the resurrection, people won't marry or be given in marriage. They'll be like the angels of God in heaven. ³¹And as for whether the dead are raised — haven't you read what God himself said to you: ³²'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He's not the God of the dead — he's the God of the living." ³³When the crowd heard this, they were amazed at his teaching. ³⁴When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. ³⁵Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked him a question, trying to tempt him, and said, ³⁶"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?" ³⁷Jesus answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' ³⁸This is the first and greatest commandment. ³⁹And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' ⁴⁰Everything in the law and the prophets hangs on these 2 commandments." ⁴¹While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ⁴²"What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They answered, "He is the son of David." ⁴³Jesus said, "Then how is it that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him Lord? David said, ⁴⁴The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool. ⁴⁵If David calls him Lord, how can he be David's son?" ⁴⁶No one could answer him. And from that day on, nobody dared ask him any more questions.
