Rejected at Nazareth

¹⁶He traveled to Nazareth, the town where he'd grown up. On the Sabbath he went to the synagogue as he always did and stood up to read. ¹⁷The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He unrolled it and found the passage that says: ¹⁸The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and to set at liberty those who are bruised, ¹⁹To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. ²⁰He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him. ²¹Then he began to say to them, "Today, this scripture is fulfilled in your ears." ²²Everyone spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that came from his mouth. Then they asked, "Isn't this Joseph's son?" ²³He said to them, "No doubt you'll quote this proverb at me: 'Doctor, heal yourself!' You'll say, 'Do here in your hometown what we've heard you did in Capernaum.'" ²⁴Then he added, "I tell you the truth — no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. ²⁵But I tell you the truth, there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, and a great famine was throughout all the land; ²⁶Yet Elijah wasn't sent to any of them. Instead, he was sent to a widow in Zarephath, in the region of Sidon. ²⁷And there were many lepers in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian. ²⁸When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were furious. ²⁹They jumped to their feet, forced him out of the city, and dragged him to the edge of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff. ³⁰But Jesus walked right through the middle of the crowd and went on his way.
