Luke 9:51–62
51As the time approached for him to be taken up, he resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52He sent messengers ahead of him, and they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. 53But the people there refused to welcome him because he was heading toward Jerusalem. 54When his disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them, just like Elijah did?" 55But he turned, rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of.” 56"The Son of Man didn't come to destroy people's lives but to save them." Then they moved on to another village. 57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "Lord, I'll follow you wherever you go." 58Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." 59To another man he said, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, let me go home first and bury my father." 60Jesus told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. You go and proclaim the kingdom of God." 61Yet another person said, "Lord, I'll follow you, but first let me go say goodbye to my family." 62Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
