Luke 24:13–35
13That same day, two of them were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 furlongs from Jerusalem. 14They talked together about all the things that had happened. 15As they talked and debated back and forth, Jesus himself came up and began walking alongside them. 16But something kept their eyes from recognizing him. 17He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you walk and look sad?" 18One of them, named Cleopas, replied, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who hasn't heard about what's happened there these past few days?" 19"What things?" he asked. They replied, "About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people." 20But our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him. 21We had hoped he was the one who would redeem Israel. On top of all that, today is the 3rd day since it happened. 22Then some women from our group shocked us. They went to the tomb early this morning, 23and when they didn't find his body, they came back saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them he was alive. 24Some of our people went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women described — but they didn't see him." 25Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are! How slow your hearts are to believe everything the prophets spoke about! 26Didn't the Christ have to suffer all these things before entering into his glory?" 27Then, starting with Moses and working through all the prophets, he explained to them everything in the Scriptures that pointed to himself. 28As they approached the village where they were headed, Jesus acted as if he were going to continue on. 29But they urged him, "Stay with us — it's almost evening and the day is nearly over." So he went inside to stay with them. 30When he sat down to eat with them, he took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and handed it to them. 31In that moment, their eyes were opened and they recognized him — and then he vanished from their sight. 32They looked at each other and said, "Weren't our hearts burning inside us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" 33They got up immediately and rushed back to Jerusalem, where they found the 11 and the others gathered together. 34Everyone was saying, "It's true! The Lord really has risen! He appeared to Simon!" 35Then the 2 told their story — what had happened on the road and how they recognized Jesus when he broke the bread.
