Mark 10:35–45
35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said, "Teacher, we want you to do something for us — whatever we ask." 36"What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. 37They answered, "When you come into your glory, let one of us sit at your right hand and the other at your left." 38Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you're asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink? Can you be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" 39"We can," they said. Jesus told them, "You will indeed drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I endure. 40But sitting at my right or left — that's not mine to give. Those places belong to the ones they've been prepared for." 41When the other ten disciples heard about this, they were very displeased with James and John. 42But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them." 43But it must not be that way among you. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. 44And whoever wants to be first must be the slave of everyone. 45Even the Son of Man didn't come to be served, but to serve — and to give his life as a ransom for many."
