Victory over Amalek

Journey to Sinai · Rephidim

Exodus 17:8–16

8Then the Amalekites came and attacked Israel at Rephidim. 9Moses told Joshua, "Pick out some men and go fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I'll stand on top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand." 10Joshua did what Moses told him and went out to fight the Amalekites. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. 11Whenever Moses raised his hand, Israel prevailed. But whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12Moses' hands grew heavy, so they brought a stone and set it under him to sit on. Aaron stood on one side and Hur on the other, each holding up one of his hands. His hands stayed steady until sunset. 13Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword. 14Then the LORD told Moses, "Write this down in a book as a memorial, and make sure Joshua hears it: I will completely erase the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven." 15Moses built an altar and named it Jehovahnissi — "The LORD Is My Banner." 16He said, "Because the LORD has sworn that the LORD will be at war with Amalek from generation to generation."

About this event

What happened?

The Amalekites attacked Israel at Rephidim. Moses sent Joshua to fight them and went up a hill with Aaron and Hur, holding the staff of God. As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel was winning. When he lowered them, Amalek was winning. When his hands grew tired, Aaron and Hur held them up, one on each side, until sunset. So Joshua defeated Amalek. Moses built an altar and called it “The LORD Is My Banner.”
