Moses' Story · Event 27 of 59
Water from the Rock
Journey to Sinai · Rephidim
Exodus 17:1–7
1The entire community of Israel left the wilderness of Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD directed. They set up camp at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2The people confronted Moses and demanded, "Give us water to drink!" Moses answered them, "Why are you fighting with me? Why are you testing the LORD?" 3The people were thirsty for water and murmured against Moses, saying, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" 4Moses cried out to the LORD, "What am I supposed to do with these people? They're about ready to stone me!" 5The LORD told Moses, "Walk out ahead of the people and bring some of the elders of Israel with you. Take the staff you used to strike the Nile, and go." 6"Look, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it so that the people may drink." Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7He named the place Massah and Meribah because the children of Israel quarreled and tested the LORD by asking, 'Is the LORD among us or not?'
