Exodus 2:1–10
1A man from the tribe of Levi married a woman who was also from the tribe of Levi. 2She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw what a beautiful baby he was, she hid him for 3 months. 3When she could no longer hide him, she made an ark of bulrushes and coated it with slime and pitch. She placed the child inside and set it among the reeds by the riverbank. 4The baby's sister stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him. 5Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her attendants walked along the riverbank. She noticed the basket among the reeds and sent one of her servants to get it. 6When she opened it, she saw the baby, and he was crying. She had compassion on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children." 7Then the baby's sister approached Pharaoh's daughter and asked, "Would you like me to find a Hebrew woman who can nurse the baby for you?" 8"Yes, go," Pharaoh's daughter told her. So the girl went and brought back the baby's own mother. 9Pharaoh's daughter said to the woman, "Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I'll pay you for it." So the woman took her son and nursed him. 10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "Because I drew him out of the water."
