The Death of Moses
Last Words · Mount Nebo
Deuteronomy 34:1–12
1Moses climbed from the plains of Moab up to Mount Nebo, to the peak of Pisgah, which faces Jericho. There the LORD showed him the entire land — from Gilead all the way to Dan, 2the whole territory of Naphtali, the lands of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all of Judah stretching west to the Mediterranean Sea, 3the southern desert region, and the Jordan Valley around Jericho — the city of palm trees — all the way down to Zoar. 4Then the LORD told him, "This is the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I've let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross over into it." 5Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab, just as the LORD had said. 6He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, across from Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyesight was still sharp, and his strength hadn't faded. 8The people of Israel mourned for Moses in the plains of Moab for 30 days. Then the time of weeping and mourning came to an end. 9Joshua, the son of Nun, was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. The children of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD commanded Moses. 10No prophet has ever risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face — 11no one who matched the signs and wonders the LORD sent him to perform in Egypt against Pharaoh, all his officials, and his entire land, 12and in all the mighty hand, and in all the great terror that Moses displayed before the eyes of all Israel.
