The Song of the Sea

Through the Sea · The Red Sea

Exodus 15:1–21

1Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD: "I will sing to the LORD, because he has won a magnificent victory! He has hurled the horse and its rider into the sea. 2The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will prepare a dwelling for him; my father's God, and I will exalt him. 3The LORD is a warrior. The LORD is his name. 4He hurled Pharaoh's chariots and army into the sea. Pharaoh's finest officers drowned in the Red Sea. 5The depths covered them; they sank to the bottom like a stone. 6Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy to pieces. 7In the greatness of your majesty, you have overthrown those who rose up against you. You sent forth your wrath, which consumed them like stubble. 8With a blast from your nostrils, the waters piled up. The rushing currents stood firm like a wall, and the deep waters froze solid in the heart of the sea. 9The enemy said, 'I will pursue them. I will overtake them. I will divide the plunder. My desire will be satisfied upon them. I will draw my sword, and my hand will destroy them.' 10But you blew with your wind, and the sea crashed over them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11Who among the gods is like you, O LORD? Who is like you — glorious in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders? 12You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them. 13In your mercy, you have led the people you redeemed. In your strength, you have guided them to your holy dwelling place. 14The people will hear and be afraid; sorrow will seize the inhabitants of Palestina. 15The leaders of Edom will be amazed; the mighty men of Moab will tremble; all the inhabitants of Canaan will melt away. 16Terror and dread will fall on them. The power of your arm will make them freeze like stone — until your people pass by, O LORD, until the people you have purchased pass by. 17You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain that is your inheritance — the place, O LORD, that you have made as your dwelling, the sanctuary that your own hands have established. 18The LORD will reign forever and ever!" 19For Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and horsemen went into the sea, and the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the children of Israel walked on dry ground in the middle of the sea. 20Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, grabbed a tambourine, and all the women followed her out with tambourines, dancing. 21Miriam sang out to them, "Sing to the LORD, because he has won a magnificent victory! He has hurled the horse and its rider into the sea."
