Eutychus Falls from the Window

The Third Journey · Troas

Acts 20:7–12

7On the first day of the week, when the disciples gathered to break bread, Paul spoke to them. Since he intended to leave the next day, he continued his message until midnight. 8There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered together. 9A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window and sank into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking. Overcome by sleep, he fell from the third story and was picked up dead. 10Paul went down, threw himself on him, and embraced him. "Don't be alarmed," he said, "for his life is in him." 11Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them a long time, until daybreak, and then left. 12They brought the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

About this event

What happened?

At Troas, the believers gathered on the first day of the week to break bread, in an upstairs room lit by many lamps. Paul talked until midnight. A young man named Eutychus, sitting in the window, sank into a deep sleep. He fell from the third story and was picked up dead. Paul went down, threw himself on him, and said, “Do not be alarmed. He is still alive.” Paul talked until daybreak, and they took the young man home alive.

Good to know

Acts says Eutychus was picked up dead, and Paul says, “He is still alive” (KJV: “his life is in him”). Many readers take this as a raising from the dead; others think he only seemed dead.
