Paul's Story · Event 9 of 42
The Sorcerer on Cyprus
The First Journey · Paphos
Acts 13:4–12
4Sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their assistant. 6They traveled through the whole island until they reached Paphos, where they found a certain Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7He was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means when translated) opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his eyes on him 10and said, "You are full of every kind of deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness! Will you never stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord? 11Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you. You will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time." Immediately a mist and darkness fell on him, and he went around searching for someone to lead him by the hand. 12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
