Breakfast by the Sea

The Risen Lord · The Sea of Galilee

John 21:1–14

1After these things, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. Here is how it happened. 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples were together. 3Simon Peter told them, "I'm going out to fish." They said to him, "We'll go with you." They went out and got into a boat immediately, but they caught nothing that night. 4When morning came, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples didn't know it was Jesus. 5Jesus called out to them, "Children, have you caught anything?" They answered him, "No." 6He told them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you'll find some." So they cast it, and they couldn't haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had stripped it off) and threw himself into the sea. 8The other disciples came in the small boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from land — only about two hundred cubits. 9When they came to land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish laid on it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." 11Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish — 153 of them — and even though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, "Come and eat." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" — knowing that it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. 14This was now the third time Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after he had risen from the dead.

About this event

What happened?

Peter went fishing on the Sea of Tiberias with six other disciples, but they caught nothing all night. At dawn a man on the shore told them to cast the net on the right side of the boat, and they could not haul it in for all the fish. “It is the Lord!” the disciple whom Jesus loved said. Simon Peter put on his outer garment and jumped into the sea. On the shore there was a charcoal fire with fish and bread. Peter dragged the net ashore, full of 153 large fish, and Jesus said, “Come, have breakfast.”
