“Do You Love Me?”

The Risen Lord · The Sea of Galilee

John 21:15–19

15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16He said to him a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my sheep." 17He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep." 18"Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked wherever you wanted. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go." 19He said this to indicate by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. And after saying this, he told him, "Follow me."

About this event

What happened?

After breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter answered, “you know I love you.” “Feed my lambs,” Jesus said. He asked a second time and a third time. Peter was hurt that Jesus asked him a third time. “Lord, you know all things,” he said. “You know I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” Then Jesus spoke of the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God, and he said to him, “Follow me.”

Who is here?

Where did this happen?

The Sea of Galilee

A large lake in Galilee. The Bible also calls it the Lake of Gennesaret and the Sea of Tiberias.

Where this fits

Event 3 of 3 in The Risen Lord: Peter runs to the empty tomb, and the risen Jesus gives him work to do.

Good to know

Many readers note that Peter is asked three times, as he had denied Jesus three times. John 21:19 says Jesus' words showed how Peter would die; the Bible does not record his death.
