Following Jesus

2 accounts of this passage

Matthew 16:21–23

21From that point on, Jesus began explaining to his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem, where he would suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes. He told them he would be killed and then raised on the third day. 22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "Lord, may this never happen to you!" 23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me. You're not thinking about things the way God does — you're thinking like a human being."

About this event

What happened?

From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things, be killed, and be raised on the third day. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me. You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

Good to know

Mark 8:31 says Jesus would rise “after three days.” Only Matthew records Peter's words and “You are a stumbling block to me.”
