Peter's Story · Event 25 of 38
Healing at the Beautiful Gate
Leader in Jerusalem · The temple in Jerusalem
Acts 3:1–26
1Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, which was the ninth hour. 2A man who had been lame since birth was carried every day to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he begged for money from those entering the temple. 3When he saw Peter and John about to enter the temple, he asked them for money. 4Peter looked straight at him, and so did John. "Look at us," Peter said. 5The man gave them his full attention, expecting them to give him something. 6Peter said, "I don't have any silver or gold, but I'll give you what I do have. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!" 7Then Peter took the man's right hand and helped him up. Instantly, his feet and ankles received strength. 8He jumped up, stood on his own, and started walking. He went into the temple with them — walking, leaping, and praising God. 9Everyone there saw him walking around and praising God. 10They knew that this was the man who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 11As the healed lame man held onto Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at Solomon's Porch, greatly wondering. 12When Peter saw it, he spoke to the people, 'Men of Israel, why are you marveling at this? Or why are you staring at us as if by our own power or holiness we made this man walk?' 13The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his Son Jesus. You handed him over and denied him in front of Pilate, even though Pilate had decided to release him. 14You rejected the Holy and Righteous One and demanded that a murderer be set free instead. 15You killed the Prince of life, but God raised him from the dead — and we are witnesses to that. 16And it is through faith in his name that this man was made strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith that comes through him has given him complete healing in front of all of you. 17Now, brothers, I know that you acted out of ignorance, and so did your leaders. 18But God was fulfilling what he had announced long ago through all his prophets — that Christ would suffer. 19So repent and be converted, so that your sins may be wiped away, and times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. 20Then he will send Jesus Christ, who was previously preached to you. 21Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore all things — just as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22Moses himself told our ancestors, 'The Lord your God will raise up a prophet for you from among your own people, just like me. You must listen to everything he tells you. 23And it shall come to pass, that every soul who does not hear that prophet shall be destroyed from among the people. 24Every prophet from Samuel onward — all who have spoken — also pointed to these very days. 25You are the heirs of those prophets and of the covenant God made with your ancestors when he told Abraham, 'Through your offspring, all the families of the earth will be blessed.' 26God raised up his Son Jesus and sent him to you first, to bless you by turning each of you away from your iniquities.
