- 1Now, brothers, I want you to be well-informed about spiritual gifts.
- 2You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these mute idols, however you were led.
- 3Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus cursed, and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
- 4There are different kinds of gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit.
- 5There are different kinds of service, but they're all directed by the same Lord.
- 6There are different ways God works through people, but it's the same God doing the work in all of them.
- 7The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the benefit of all.
- 8The Spirit gives one person a message of wisdom, and another a message of knowledge through that same Spirit.
- 9To another, faith by the same Spirit; to another, gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
- 10One person receives the power to perform miracles, another the gift of prophecy, another the ability to tell the difference between spirits, another the ability to speak in different tongues, and another the ability to interpret those tongues.
- 11But one and the same Spirit produces all of these gifts, distributing them to each person individually, exactly as he chooses.
- 12For as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of that one body, though many, are one body, so also is Christ.
- 13We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — whether Jewish or Greek, slave or free — and we were all given the same Spirit to drink.
- 14After all, a body isn't made up of just one part. It has many.
- 15If the foot said, "I'm not a hand, so I don't belong to the body," that wouldn't actually make it any less a part of the body.
- 16If the ear said, "I'm not an eye, so I don't belong to the body," that wouldn't make it any less a part of the body either.
- 17If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear anything? If the whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?
- 18But God placed each part in the body exactly where he wanted it.
- 19If everything were the same part, there wouldn't be a body at all!
- 20The reality is that there are many parts, but they form one body.
- 21The eye can't tell the hand, "I don't need you." The head can't tell the feet, "I don't need you."
- 22No, even more so, the parts of the body that seem weaker are necessary.
- 23The parts we consider less honorable, we give extra honor; and the parts that are less presentable are treated with greater care.
- 24Our more presentable parts don't need that kind of attention. But God has blended the body together, giving extra honor to the parts that lack it.
- 25He did this so there would be no division in the body, but instead every part would care equally for all the others.
- 26When one part suffers, every part suffers with it. When one part is honored, every part celebrates with it.
- 27Together, you are the body of Christ, and each of you is an individual part of it.
- 28In the church, God has appointed first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, then those with gifts of healing, those who help others, those who lead, and those who speak in different tongues.
- 29Is everyone an apostle? Is everyone a prophet? Is everyone a teacher? Does everyone work miracles?
- 30Does everyone have gifts of healing? Does everyone speak in tongues? Does everyone interpret?
- 31Eagerly pursue the greater gifts. But now let me show you a way that surpasses them all.
