  1. 1Just as there were false prophets among God's people in the past, there will also be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them — and in doing so, they will bring swift destruction on themselves.
  2. 2Many people will follow their shameful ways, and because of them, the way of truth will be slandered.
  3. 3Driven by greed, they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their judgment has been ready for a long time, and their damnation is not asleep.
  4. 4After all, God didn't spare the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell and locked them in chains of darkness, holding them there until the day of judgment.
  5. 5He didn't spare the ancient world either. He sent a flood to destroy the ungodly, but he protected Noah — a preacher of righteousness — along with seven others.
  6. 6He reduced the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes, condemning them to destruction as an example for those who would later live ungodly lives.
  7. 7And he rescued righteous Lot, who was distressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked:
  8. 8(Living among them day after day, that righteous man was tormented in his soul by the lawless things he saw and heard.)
  9. 9So the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, and he knows how to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment —
  10. 10especially those who follow the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous and self-willed, not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
  11. 11Yet even angels, who are greater in power and strength, don't bring insulting accusations against them before the Lord.
  12. 12But these false teachers are like mindless animals, creatures of pure instinct born only to be caught and killed. They mock things they don't understand, and they will be destroyed right along with their own corruption.
  13. 13They will receive the reward of unrighteousness, like those who find pleasure in rioting during the day. They are stains and blemishes, indulging in their own deceptions while they feast with you.
  14. 14Their eyes are full of adultery, and they cannot stop sinning. They deceive unstable souls. Their hearts are trained in greed. They are cursed children.
  15. 15They've abandoned the right path and wandered off, following the example of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved getting paid for doing wrong.
  16. 16But Balaam was called out for his sin — a donkey that couldn't speak opened its mouth and talked with a human voice, putting a stop to the prophet's madness.
  17. 17These false teachers are springs without water and clouds carried by a violent storm; the mist of darkness is reserved for them forever.
  18. 18For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much sensuality, those who were just escaping from those who live in error.
  19. 19They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves to corruption. Because whatever masters you is what enslaves you.
  20. 20If people escape the filth of this world by coming to know the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but then get tangled up in it again and are overpowered by it, they end up worse off than they were before.
  21. 21It would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than to know it and then turn their backs on the holy commandment that was given to them.
  22. 22What happened to them proves the old proverbs true: "A dog returns to its own vomit," and "A pig that's been washed goes right back to rolling in the mud."
