  1. 1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. In both letters, I have been trying to stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance.
  2. 2I want you to remember the words spoken long ago by the holy prophets, and the commandment given by us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior.
  3. 3First and foremost, understand this: in the last days, mockers will show up who are driven by their own desires.
  4. 4They will say, 'Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has since the beginning of creation.'
  5. 5For they willingly ignore this: that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of the water and standing in the water.
  6. 6And it was through water that the world of that time was flooded and destroyed.
  7. 7By that same word of God, the present heavens and earth are being held in reserve for fire, kept for the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly people.
  8. 8Dear friends, don't overlook this one thing: to the Lord, a single day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a single day.
  9. 9The Lord isn't slow to keep his promise the way some people think of slowness. Instead, he's patient with you, because he doesn't want anyone to perish. He wants everyone to come to repentance.
  10. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat; the earth also and the works that are in it shall be burned up.
  11. 11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conduct and godliness,
  12. 12eagerly looking forward to and hastening the coming of the day of God. On that day, the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the elements will melt in intense heat.
  13. 13But based on his promise, we look forward to new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
  14. 14So then, dear friends, since you're waiting for these things, make every effort to be found at peace with him — spotless and blameless.
  15. 15Understand that our Lord's patience means salvation. Our dear brother Paul wrote the same thing to you, using the wisdom God gave him.
  16. 16He talks about these things in all his letters. Some parts of his writing are hard to understand, and ignorant and unstable people twist them — just as they twist the rest of the Scriptures — and it leads to their own destruction.
  17. 17You therefore, beloved, seeing you know these things beforehand, beware lest you also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.
  18. 18Instead, keep growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory now and forever. Amen.
