- 1Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and trust in the mountain of Samaria, who are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
- 2Go look at Calneh. Then travel to the great city of Hamath. Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are those kingdoms really better off than yours? Is their territory larger than yours?
- 3You push away the day of disaster and bring the seat of violence closer.
- 4You lounge on beds inlaid with ivory and sprawl across your couches. You feast on the choicest lambs from the flock and the fattest calves from the stall.
- 5You sing to the sound of the viol and create musical instruments for yourselves, like David did.
- 6You drink wine from bowls and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
- 7Therefore, you will be the first to go into exile, and the feasting of those who lounge will end.
- 8The Lord GOD has sworn by himself, says the LORD, the God of hosts: I abhor the excellency of Jacob and hate his palaces. Therefore, I will deliver up the city with everything in it.
- 9If 10 men are left in a single house, every one of them will die.
- 10When a relative comes with the one who burns the bodies to carry the dead out of the house, he'll call to anyone still inside, "Is anyone left with you?" The answer will come back, "No one." Then he'll say, "Quiet! We must not even speak the name of the LORD."
- 11Look — the LORD gives the command, and the great house will be struck with breaches, and the small house with clefts.
- 12Do horses run on rocky ground? Does anyone plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock.
- 13You celebrate over nothing and boast, 'Haven't we gained horns by our own strength?'
- 14“But look, I will raise up a nation against you, house of Israel,” says the LORD, the God of hosts. “They will afflict you from the entrance of Hemath to the river of the wilderness.”
