  1. 1This is what the Lord GOD showed me: He was forming a swarm of locusts just as the late crops were beginning to sprout — the crops that grew after the king's share had already been harvested.
  2. 2When they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said, “O Lord GOD, forgive, I beg you: by whom will Jacob arise? For he is small.”
  3. 3The LORD repented for this: "It shall not happen," said the LORD.
  4. 4This is what the Lord GOD showed me: The Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it consumed the great deep and devoured a part.
  5. 5I cried out, "Lord GOD, please stop! How can Jacob survive? He's so small!"
  6. 6The LORD repented for this: "This also shall not happen," said the Lord GOD.
  7. 7This is what he showed me: Look, the Lord stood upon a wall by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.
  8. 8The LORD asked me, "Amos, what do you see?" I answered, "A plumb line." Then the LORD said, "I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel. I will not pass by them again anymore."
  9. 9The high places of Isaac will be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste. I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
  10. 10Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words."
  11. 11For this is what Amos says: 'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely be led away captive from their own land.'
  12. 12Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there."
  13. 13But don't prophesy anymore at Bethel, for it is the king's chapel and the king's court.
  14. 14Amos answered Amaziah, "I was not a prophet, nor was I the son of a prophet; I was a herder and a gatherer of sycamore figs."
  15. 15But the LORD took me away from tending the flock and said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
  16. 16So now hear the word of the LORD. You tell me, 'Don't prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the house of Isaac.'
  17. 17Therefore, this is what the LORD says: Your wife will be a harlot in the city, your sons and daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be divided by line, and you will die in a polluted land. Israel will surely go into captivity away from its land.
