  1. 1This is what the Lord GOD showed me: a basket of ripe summer fruit.
  2. 2He asked, "Amos, what do you see?" I answered, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The end has come for my people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore."
  3. 3"On that day," declares the Lord GOD, "the songs of the temple will turn into wailing. Dead bodies will be everywhere, thrown out in silence."
  4. 4Listen to this, you who swallow up the needy and cause the poor of the land to fail,
  5. 5You say, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain? When will the Sabbath end so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel large and use dishonest scales.”
  6. 6That we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and sell the sweepings of the wheat?
  7. 7The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: "I will never forget a single thing they have done."
  8. 8Won't the land tremble because of this, and everyone who lives in it mourn? The whole land will rise up like a flood and be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.
  9. 9"On that day," declares the Lord GOD, "I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight."
  10. 10I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will put sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head. I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end will be like a bitter day.
  11. 11"The days are coming," declares the Lord GOD, "when I will send a famine across the land — not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD."
  12. 12People will wander from sea to sea and from the north to the east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.
  13. 13On that day, the fair virgins and young men will faint from thirst.
  14. 14Those who swear by the sin of Samaria and say, 'Your god lives, O Dan,' and, 'The manner of Beersheba lives,' they will fall and never rise again.
