- 1In the third year of King Cyrus of Persia, a message was revealed to Daniel, who was also called Belteshazzar. The message was true, but the appointed time was long. Daniel understood the message and had insight into the vision.
- 2During that time, I, Daniel, spent 3 full weeks in mourning.
- 3I ate no rich food. No meat or wine touched my lips, and I didn't use any oils on my body for the entire 3 weeks.
- 4On the 24th day of the first month, I was standing on the bank of the great river — the Tigris.
- 5I looked up and saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of pure gold from Uphaz around his waist.
- 6His body gleamed like beryl. His face flashed like lightning, and his eyes blazed like torches of fire. His arms and feet shone like polished bronze, and his voice was like the sound of a multitude.
- 7I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision. The men with me didn't see it, but an overwhelming terror seized them, and they ran and hid.
- 8So I was left alone and saw this great vision, and no strength remained in me, for my healthy appearance was turned into corruption in me, and I kept no strength.
- 9Then I heard the sound of his voice, and when I heard it, I fell into a deep sleep with my face toward the ground.
- 10Suddenly, a hand touched me, placing me on my hands and knees.
- 11He said to me, "Daniel, you are deeply loved. Pay close attention to the words I'm about to say to you, and stand up — because I've been sent to you." When he said this, I stood to my feet, still trembling.
- 12Then he said to me, "Don't be afraid, Daniel. From the first day you set your heart to understand and disciplined yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come because of your words."
- 13But the prince of the kingdom of Persia resisted me for 21 days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I had been detained there with the kings of Persia.
- 14Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, because the vision is for many days yet to come.
- 15While he was saying these things to me, I bowed my face toward the ground and couldn't speak.
- 16Then someone who looked like a human being touched my lips. I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me, "My lord, this vision has overwhelmed me with anguish, and I have no strength left.
- 17How can the servant of my lord talk with my lord? As for me, right away no strength remained in me, and no breath was left in me.
- 18Once again, the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength.
- 19He said, "You are deeply loved — don't be afraid. Peace to you. Be strong! Yes, be strong!" As he spoke, my strength returned, and I said, "Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me."
- 20Then he said, "Do you know why I've come to you? Soon I must return to fight against the prince of Persia, and after that, the prince of Greece will come.
- 21But I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. No one supports me in these matters except Michael, your prince.
