  1. 1"In the first year of Darius the Mede, I took my stand to support and strengthen him.
  2. 2Now I will show you the truth. Three more kings will rise in Persia, and then a fourth who will be far richer than all the others. By his strength through his wealth, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.
  3. 3Then a mighty king will rise up and rule with enormous power, doing whatever he pleases.
  4. 4And when he rises to power, his kingdom will be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven. It won't go to his descendants, nor will it be ruled with the same authority he had. His kingdom will be uprooted and given to others.
  5. 5"The king of the south will grow strong, but one of his commanders will become even stronger and rule a vast domain.
  6. 6At the end of years they will join together. The daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make an agreement. But she will not keep the power of the arm, and neither he nor his arm will stand. She will be given up, along with those who brought her, he who fathered her, and he who strengthened her in those times.
  7. 7But someone from her own family line will rise up in his place. He will come with an army, enter the fortress of the king of the north, and will act against them and prevail.
  8. 8He will carry off to Egypt their gods, their princes, and their valuable items of silver and gold. He will outlast the king of the north by several years.
  9. 9Then the king of the south will enter his kingdom and return to his own land.
  10. 10His sons will prepare for war and assemble a massive army. One of them will sweep through like a flood, pushing all the way to the enemy's fortress, then regroup and attack again.
  11. 11"Furious, the king of the south will march out and fight the king of the north, who will have raised a huge army. But that army will be handed over to the king of the south.
  12. 12After defeating that massive force, the king of the south will swell with pride. He will slaughter tens of thousands, but his victory won't last.
  13. 13The king of the north will come back after several years with an army even larger than before, equipped with vast supplies.
  14. 14"In those days, many will rebel against the king of the south. Violent men among your own people will rise up, trying to fulfill the vision, but they will fail.
  15. 15Then the king of the north will come, build siege ramps, and capture a heavily fortified city. The southern forces won't be able to resist — not even their best troops will have the strength to hold out.
  16. 16The invader will do whatever he wants, and no one will be able to stop him. He will establish himself in the glorious land, with the power to destroy it completely.
  17. 17He will also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; this is what he will do. He will give him the daughter of women, to corrupt her, but she will not stand on his side or be for him.
  18. 18After that, he will turn his attention to the coastlands and capture many of them. But a military commander will put an end to his arrogance and turn that disgrace back on him.
  19. 19He will then retreat to the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble and fall and never be seen again.
  20. 20"His successor will send a tax collector through the kingdom to maintain its splendor. But within a few days he will be destroyed — not in anger and not in battle.
  21. 21"He will be replaced by a despicable man who has no rightful claim to the throne. He will slip in during a time of peace and seize the kingdom through manipulation and flattery.
  22. 22Overwhelming forces will be swept away before him and crushed, including the leader of the covenant.
  23. 23After making an alliance, he will act deceitfully. With only a small following, he will rise to power.
  24. 24During a time of peace, he will invade the richest parts of the land and do what none of his ancestors ever did — he will distribute plunder, loot, and wealth among his followers. He will plot against fortified cities, but only for a limited time.
  25. 25"He will summon all his power and courage to attack the king of the south with a massive army. The king of the south will fight back with an enormous and powerful force, but he won't succeed because plots will be hatched against him.
  26. 26Those who eat at his own table will betray him. His army will be swept away, and many will be killed.
  27. 27Both kings will sit at the same table with evil in their hearts, trading lies back and forth. But none of their schemes will succeed, because the end will come only at the appointed time.
  28. 28The king of the north will head home with enormous wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action against it, then return to his own land.
  29. 29"At the appointed time, he will invade the south again, but this time things won't go as they did before.
  30. 30For ships from Chittim will come against him, and he will be grieved. He will turn back in anger against the holy covenant and take action. Then he will collaborate with those who have abandoned the holy covenant.
  31. 31"His armed forces will rise up and defile the fortified temple. They will abolish the daily sacrifice and set up the abomination that causes desolation.
  32. 32He will use flattery to corrupt those who have already violated the covenant. But the people who truly know their God will stand firm and take action.
  33. 33"The wise among the people will teach many others. Yet for a long time, they will fall by the sword and by fire, and be taken captive and robbed.
  34. 34When they stumble, they will receive a little help, though many who join them will do so with false motives.
  35. 35Some of the wise will fall, to test them, purge them, and make them white — until the time of the end, because it is still for an appointed time.
  36. 36"The king will do whatever he pleases. He will exalt himself and set himself above every god, and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods. He will succeed until the time of wrath is complete, because what has been determined must take place.
  37. 37He won't respect the God of his ancestors, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god, because he will place himself above them all.
  38. 38Instead, he will honor the god of fortresses — a god his ancestors never knew — showering it with gold, silver, precious stones, and costly gifts.
  39. 39He will act against the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god, whom he will acknowledge and honor with glory. He will make them rulers over many people and distribute land for profit.
  40. 40"At the time of the end, the king of the south will attack him. But the king of the north will storm against him like a whirlwind with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet of ships. He will invade many countries, sweeping through them like a flood.
  41. 41He will also invade the glorious land, and many regions will be overthrown. But Edom, Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon will escape his grasp.
  42. 42He will extend his power over many countries, and even Egypt won't escape.
  43. 43He will seize the treasures of gold and silver and all the precious things of Egypt. The Libyans and Ethiopians will follow at his heels.
  44. 44But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will march out in a furious rage to destroy and wipe out many.
  45. 45He will set up the tents of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.
