  1. 1At that time the LORD told me, "Cut 2 stone tablets just like the first ones, then come up to me on the mountain. Also build a wooden chest.
  2. 2I will write on these tablets the same words that were on the first tablets — the ones you smashed. Then you are to place them inside the chest."
  3. 3So I built a chest out of acacia wood, cut 2 stone tablets identical to the first ones, and climbed the mountain carrying both tablets.
  4. 4The LORD wrote on these tablets exactly what he had written before — the 10 commandments he had spoken to you from the fire on the mountain during the day of the assembly. Then the LORD handed them to me.
  5. 5I turned and came back down the mountain, placed the tablets inside the chest I had made, and that is where they remain, just as the LORD commanded me.
  6. 6(The Israelites traveled from Beeroth Bene Jaakan to Moserah. That is where Aaron died and was buried, and his son Eleazar took over as priest in his place.
  7. 7From there they traveled to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a region rich with flowing streams.
  8. 8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the LORD's covenant, to stand in the LORD's presence and serve him, and to pronounce blessings in his name — and they still do this today.
  9. 9That is why Levi received no land or inheritance like the other tribes. The LORD himself is their inheritance, just as the LORD your God promised them.)
  10. 10I stayed on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights, just like the first time. Once again the LORD listened to me, and the LORD chose not to destroy you.
  11. 11Then the LORD said to me, "Get up and lead the people on their journey, so they can enter and take possession of the land I swore to give their ancestors."
  12. 12So now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you? Simply this: fear the LORD your God, follow all his ways, love him, and serve the LORD your God with everything you have — your whole heart and your whole soul —
  13. 13and obey the LORD's commands and laws that I'm giving you today for your own good.
  14. 14Think about this: the heavens belong to the LORD your God — even the highest heavens — along with the earth and everything in it.
  15. 15Yet out of all that, the LORD set his heart on your ancestors and loved them. He chose their descendants — that's you — above every other nation on earth, and that's still true today.
  16. 16Therefore, circumcise the foreskin of your heart and stop being stubborn.
  17. 17The LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords. He is a great God, mighty and terrible, who shows no favoritism and accepts no bribes.
  18. 18He makes sure orphans and widows receive justice, and he loves the foreigner by providing them with food and clothing.
  19. 19So you must love the foreigner too, because you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.
  20. 20Fear the LORD your God. Serve him. Hold tightly to him, and take your oaths in his name alone.
  21. 21He is the one you praise, and He is your God, who has done these great and terrible things that you have seen with your own eyes.
  22. 22When your ancestors went down to Egypt, there were only 70 of them. But now the LORD your God has made you as countless as the stars in the sky.
