  1. 1So love the LORD your God, and always obey his requirements — his laws, his regulations, and his commandments.
  2. 2Know this today: I am not speaking to your children who have not known and have not seen the discipline of the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his outstretched arm,
  3. 3his miracles and his powerful acts that he performed right in the heart of Egypt against Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and against his entire land;
  4. 4what he did to the Egyptian army, their horses, and their chariots — how he made the waters of the Red Sea overflow them as they chased you, and how the LORD has destroyed them to this day;
  5. 5what he did for you in the wilderness all the way until you arrived at this place;
  6. 6and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, along with their households, their tents, and all the substance in their possession, in the midst of all Israel:
  7. 7You saw all of this with your own eyes — every great thing the LORD has done.
  8. 8So obey every commandment I'm giving you today. This will make you strong enough to cross over and take possession of the land you're about to enter,
  9. 9and it will give you long lives in the land the LORD promised to your ancestors and their descendants — a land flowing with milk and honey.
  10. 10The land you're about to enter and possess is nothing like Egypt, where you came from. In Egypt, you planted your seeds and irrigated them by foot, like watering a vegetable garden.
  11. 11But the land you're crossing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys that drinks its water from the rain of heaven.
  12. 12It's a land the LORD your God personally cares for. His eyes are on it constantly, from the first day of the year to the last.
  13. 13If you carefully obey the commandments I'm giving you today — to love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and all your soul —
  14. 14then I will send rain on your land at just the right time, both the early rains and the late rains, so you can harvest your grain, your wine, and your olive oil.
  15. 15I will grow grass in your fields for your livestock, and you will eat until you're satisfied.
  16. 16But be careful! Don't let your hearts be deceived. Don't turn away to serve other gods and worship them,
  17. 17or the LORD's anger will burn against you. He will shut the heavens so no rain falls, and the ground won't produce its crops. Then you'll quickly disappear from the good land the LORD is giving you.
  18. 18Therefore, store these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, so that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
  19. 19Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you're sitting at home and when you're walking down the road, when you lie down at night and when you get up in the morning.
  20. 20Write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates.
  21. 21Then you and your children will live long in the land the LORD promised to your ancestors — as long as the heavens remain above the earth.
  22. 22If you carefully follow every commandment I'm giving you — doing what they say, loving the LORD your God, walking in all his ways, and holding tightly to him —
  23. 23then the LORD will drive out all these nations ahead of you, and you will take over nations that are bigger and more powerful than you are.
  24. 24Every place your foot touches will be yours. Your territory will stretch from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River all the way to the western sea.
  25. 25No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God will spread the fear and dread of you across every land where you set foot, just as he promised you.
  26. 26Look — today I'm placing before you a blessing and a curse:
  27. 27the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I'm giving you today;
  28. 28and the curse, if you disobey the commandments of the LORD your God and turn away from the path I'm laying out for you today by chasing after other gods you've never known.
  29. 29When the LORD your God brings you into the land you're going to possess, you must proclaim the blessing from Mount Gerizim and the curse from Mount Ebal.
  30. 30Are they not across the Jordan, by the road where the sun sets, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the plain opposite Gilgal, near the plains of Moreh?
  31. 31You are about to cross the Jordan and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you. You will claim it and settle there.
  32. 32Make sure you follow every law and regulation I'm placing before you today.
