- 1Then we turned and headed up the road toward Bashan. King Og of Bashan marched out with his entire army to fight us at Edrei.
- 2The LORD told me, "Don't be afraid of him. I'm handing him over to you — him, his entire army, and his land. Do to him exactly what you did to Sihon, the Amorite king who ruled from Heshbon."
- 3So the LORD our God handed King Og of Bashan and all his people over to us. We struck them down until not a single survivor remained.
- 4We captured every one of his cities — all 60 of them — the entire region of Argob, which was Og's kingdom in Bashan. Not one city escaped us.
- 5All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars; besides, there were a great many unwalled towns.
- 6We completely destroyed them, just as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon, destroying the men, women, and children of every city.
- 7But we kept all the livestock and the plunder from the cities for ourselves.
- 8At that time, we took the land from the 2 Amorite kings who controlled the territory east of the Jordan, stretching from the Arnon Valley all the way to Mount Hermon.
- 9(The Sidonians call Hermon "Sirion," and the Amorites call it "Shenir.")
- 10We captured all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan as far as Salchah and Edrei — cities that belonged to Og's kingdom in Bashan.
- 11Only Og, king of Bashan, remained from the remnant of giants. Look, his bedstead was made of iron. Is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? It was 9 cubits long and 4 cubits wide, according to the cubit of a man.
- 12When we took possession of this land, I gave the area from Aroer by the Arnon River, and half of Mount Gilead and its cities, to the tribes of Reuben and Gad.
- 13The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan — Og's former kingdom — I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. This included the entire region of Argob. (All of Bashan used to be called the land of the giants.)
- 14Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the entire region of Argob up to the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites. He renamed those settlements after himself, calling them Bashanhavothjair — and that name has stuck to this day.
- 15I gave Gilead to Machir.
- 16To the tribes of Reuben and Gad, I gave the territory from Gilead down to the Arnon Valley — with the middle of the valley as one boundary — and up to the Jabbok River, which forms the border with the Ammonites.
- 17The plain also, and the Jordan with its border, from Chinnereth to the sea of the plain, the Salt Sea, below Ashdoth-pisgah on the east.
- 18At that time I gave these tribes an order: "The LORD your God has given you this land as your own. But every fighting man among you must cross the Jordan armed and ready, marching ahead of your Israelite brothers.
- 19Your wives, your children, and your livestock — and I know you have plenty of livestock — will stay behind in the cities I've given you.
- 20Until the LORD has given rest to your brothers, as well as to you, and until they also possess the land the LORD your God has given them beyond Jordan: then each of you will return to the possession I have given you.
- 21I also gave Joshua instructions at that time: "You've seen with your own eyes everything the LORD your God did to these 2 kings. The LORD will do the same thing to every kingdom you encounter when you cross over.
- 22Don't fear them, because the LORD your God himself is fighting for you."
- 23At that time, I pleaded with the LORD:
- 24"Lord GOD, you've only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty power. What god in heaven or on earth can match your works or your mighty acts?
- 25Please, let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan — those beautiful hills and Lebanon."
- 26But the LORD was angry with me because of you, and he refused to listen. The LORD said to me, "Enough! Don't bring this up with me again.
- 27Climb to the top of Pisgah and look in every direction — west, north, south, and east. Take a long look, because you will never cross this Jordan.
- 28Instead, commission Joshua. Encourage him and strengthen him, because he's the one who will lead this people across and help them take possession of the land you can only see from here."
- 29So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.
