  1. 1A man from the tribe of Levi married a woman who was also from the tribe of Levi.
  2. 2She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw what a beautiful baby he was, she hid him for 3 months.
  3. 3When she could no longer hide him, she made an ark of bulrushes and coated it with slime and pitch. She placed the child inside and set it among the reeds by the riverbank.
  4. 4The baby's sister stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him.
  5. 5Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her attendants walked along the riverbank. She noticed the basket among the reeds and sent one of her servants to get it.
  6. 6When she opened it, she saw the baby, and he was crying. She had compassion on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children."
  7. 7Then the baby's sister approached Pharaoh's daughter and asked, "Would you like me to find a Hebrew woman who can nurse the baby for you?"
  8. 8"Yes, go," Pharaoh's daughter told her. So the girl went and brought back the baby's own mother.
  9. 9Pharaoh's daughter said to the woman, "Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I'll pay you for it." So the woman took her son and nursed him.
  10. 10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "Because I drew him out of the water."
  11. 11In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people and observed their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his own people.
  12. 12Moses looked around in every direction, and when he saw that there was no one there, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
  13. 13The next day he went out again and saw two Hebrew men fighting each other. He said to the one in the wrong, "Why are you hitting your own countryman?"
  14. 14The man replied, "Who made you a prince and judge over us? Are you planning to kill me like you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was afraid and said, "Surely this thing is known."
  15. 15When Pharaoh heard about this, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down by a well.
  16. 16Now the priest of Midian had 7 daughters. They came to the well, drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.
  17. 17Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
  18. 18When the daughters returned to their father Reuel, he asked, "How did you get back so early today?"
  19. 19They answered, "An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock."
  20. 20And he asked his daughters, "Where is he? Why did you leave the man? Call him, so he can eat bread."
  21. 21Moses agreed to stay with the man, and Reuel gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses as his wife.
  22. 22She gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, "I have been a foreigner in a foreign land."
  23. 23After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned because of their slavery and cried out. Their cries rose up to God because of their bondage.
  24. 24God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
  25. 25God looked upon the children of Israel and had regard for them.
