Verse Analysis

Plain-English insight for readers

In this moment, the glory of the LORD, which represents His presence and power, moves away from the temple. This is significant because the temple was the center of worship and connection with God. The glory resting above the cherubim indicates a shift in how God interacts with His people. The cherubim symbolize divine protection and guidance. By moving from the threshold, God is showing that His presence is no longer in the same place. This can be a reminder that our relationship with God can change based on our actions and choices. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a close connection with Him. When we stray, we may feel a distance from His presence, just as the people did in Ezekiel's time. Understanding this can help us seek to restore our relationship with God, ensuring His glory remains in our lives and communities. We are encouraged to reflect on where we stand in our faith and how we can invite His presence back into our hearts and lives, just as the people needed to do. Explore related gods.

Ezekiel 1: Visions of God

The word of the LORD comes to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the river Chebar in the land of the Chaldeans. He sees visions of God as the heavens open. A great cloud comes from the north with a fire flashing continually and brightness around it, and from the midst appears something like glowing metal. From the fire emerge four living creatures, each with the likeness of a man. Each has four faces and four wings, and their legs are straight with feet like a calf's foot, shining like polished brass. Their faces are those of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle, and their wings are joined one to another as they move straight forward without turning.
