- 1The word of the LORD also came to me, saying,
- 2Son of man, you are living in the midst of a rebellious house. They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear, because they are a rebellious house.
- 3"So, son of man, pack your belongings as if you're going into exile. Do it during the day where they can watch. Move your things from where you are to another place right in front of them. Maybe they'll take notice, even though they are a rebellious house."
- 4"Bring your bags out during the day while they watch, packed like an exile's luggage. Then at evening, go out yourself in their sight, the way someone leaves when they're being taken into captivity."
- 5"Dig a hole through the wall while they're watching, and carry your things out through it."
- 6"Hoist your bags onto your shoulder in their sight and carry them out after dark. Cover your face so you can't see the ground, because I am making you a sign for the house of Israel."
- 7So I did exactly as I was told. During the day I brought out my bags, packed like an exile's luggage. That evening I dug through the wall with my hands, and after dark I carried everything out on my shoulder while they watched.
- 8The next morning the word of the LORD came to me:
- 9"Son of man, didn't the house of Israel — that rebellious house — ask you, 'What are you doing?'"
- 10Tell them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem and the entire house of Israel living there.'
- 11"Tell them, 'I am your sign. What I have done is exactly what will happen to them — they will be driven out and taken into captivity.'"
- 12The prince among them will carry his belongings on his shoulder at twilight and go out. They will dig through the wall to carry things out that way. He will cover his face so he cannot see the ground with his eyes.
- 13"But I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my trap. I will bring him to Babylon, to the land of the Chaldeans — yet he will never see it, even though he will die there."
- 14I will scatter to every wind all who are around him to help him, and all his troops, and I will draw out the sword after them.
- 15"They will know that I am the LORD when I scatter them among the nations and disperse them across foreign lands."
- 16But I will spare a few of them from the sword, from famine, and from plague, so they can declare all their abominations among the nations where they end up. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
- 17The word of the LORD also came to me:
- 18Son of man, eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling and carefulness;
- 19Tell the people of the land, “This is what the Lord GOD says about the people of Jerusalem and the land of Israel: They will eat their bread with anxious care and drink their water in astonishment, so that their land will be left desolate of everything in it because of the violence of all who live there.”
- 20"The populated cities will be destroyed, and the land will become a wasteland. Then you will know that I am the LORD.'"
- 21The word of the LORD came to me:
- 22Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel, saying, 'The days are prolonged, and every vision fails'?
- 23"So tell them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: I'm putting an end to that saying. No one in Israel will use it anymore.' Instead, tell them, 'The time has come. Every vision is about to be fulfilled."
- 24There will no longer be any false visions or flattering divination within the house of Israel.
- 25"For I am the LORD. When I speak, what I say will happen — no more delays. In your own lifetime, you rebellious house, I will speak the word and carry it out," declares the Lord GOD."
- 26The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 27"Son of man, look — the house of Israel keeps saying, 'The visions he sees are for the distant future. He's prophesying about things far off.'"
- 28"So tell them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: Not one of my words will be delayed any longer. Whatever I have spoken will be done," declares the Lord GOD.'"
