- 1On the 1st day of the month in the 11th year, the word of the LORD came to me:
- 2Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, 'Aha, she is broken, the one who was the gateway of the people; she has turned to me, and I will be filled now that she is laid waste.'
- 3Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I am against you, Tyre, and will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes its waves to come up.
- 4They will tear down your walls and demolish your towers. I will scrape away even your rubble and leave you as nothing but bare rock.
- 5It will be a place for spreading nets in the middle of the sea, for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD, and it will become a spoil to the nations.
- 6And her daughters who are in the field will be killed by the sword; then they will know that I am the LORD.
- 7For the Lord GOD says: 'I am bringing Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon against Tyre — the king of kings — from the north, with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a massive army.
- 8He will kill your daughters in the field with the sword. He will build a fort against you, cast a mound against you, and lift up a shield against you.
- 9He will set engines of war against your walls and break down your towers with his axes.
- 10His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen, the wheels, and the chariots as he enters your gates, like men entering a city with a breach.
- 11His horses' hooves will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your strong garrisons will be brought down to the ground.
- 12They will loot your wealth and carry off your merchandise. They will demolish your walls and tear down your beautiful homes, then dump your stones, timber, and rubble into the midst of the water.
- 13I will make the noise of your songs stop, and the sound of your harps will no longer be heard.
- 14I will make you like the top of a rock, a place to spread nets upon. You will never be rebuilt, for I, the LORD, have spoken, says the Lord GOD.
- 15This is what the Lord GOD says to Tyre: Will the islands not shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you?
- 16Then all the princes of the sea will come down from their thrones, remove their robes, and take off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling, sit on the ground, tremble at every moment, and be astonished at you.
- 17They will take up a lamentation for you and say to you, How you are destroyed, you who were inhabited by seafaring men, the renowned city, which was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who put their terror on all who lived there!
- 18Now the isles will tremble on the day of your fall; yes, the isles in the sea will be troubled at your departure.
- 19For the Lord GOD says: 'When I turn you into a deserted ruin, like cities where no one lives anymore — when I bring the ocean depths surging over you and the great waters swallow you —
- 20When I bring you down with those who go down into the pit, with the people of old time, and set you in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living;
- 21I will make you a terror, and you will be no more. Even if people search for you, you will never be found again,' declares the Lord GOD.
