- 1The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 2Son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyre;
- 3Say to Tyre, 'You sit at the gateway of the sea, trading with nations across many coastlands. This is what the Lord GOD says: Tyre, you have said, "I am perfect in beauty."'
- 4Your borders stretch into the heart of the seas, and your builders have made your beauty flawless.
- 5They crafted all your planks from cypress trees of Senir and cut cedars from Lebanon to make your masts.
- 6They made your oars from the oaks of Bashan; the company of the Ashurites made your benches of ivory, brought from the islands of Chittim.
- 7Your sail was fine Egyptian linen with embroidered designs, serving as your banner. Your awning was dyed blue and purple cloth from the coastlands of Elishah.
- 8The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were your mariners: your wise men, O Tyre, who were in you, were your pilots.
- 9The elders and craftsmen of Gebal were on board to seal your seams. Every ship on the sea and its sailors came to you to trade their goods.
- 10Soldiers from Persia, Lud, and Phut served in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls, adding to your splendor.
- 11Warriors from Arvad manned your walls on every side, and the Gammadims were in your towers. They hung their shields all around your walls, completing your beauty.
- 12Tarshish did business with you because of your enormous wealth. They exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your goods.
- 13Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your merchants. They traded human beings and bronze vessels in your market.
- 14The people of Togarmah traded horses, war horses, and mules for your goods.
- 15The men of Dedan traded with you, and many coastlands were your customers. They paid you with ivory tusks and ebony.
- 16Syria was your trading partner because you produced so many goods. They exchanged emeralds, purple cloth, embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and agate for your wares.
- 17Judah and the land of Israel were your merchants. They traded wheat from Minnith, Pannag, honey, oil, and balm in your market.
- 18Damascus traded with you because of your vast production and enormous wealth, dealing in wine from Helbon and white wool.
- 19Dan and Javan traveled back and forth to your markets, bringing polished iron, cassia, and calamus as part of your merchandise.
- 20Dedan traded with you in precious clothes for chariots.
- 21Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers, trading lambs, rams, and goats with you.
- 22The merchants of Sheba and Raamah did business with you, exchanging the finest spices, every kind of precious stone, and gold for your wares.
- 23Haran, Canneh, Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad — all of them were your merchants.
- 24They traded with you in luxury goods: blue fabrics, embroidered work, and chests of fine clothing bound with cords and packed in cedar — all part of your merchandise.
- 25The ships of Tarshish sang of you in your market: and you were filled and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.
- 26Your rowers brought you out into deep waters, but the east wind has shattered you in the heart of the seas.
- 27On the day of your destruction, everything will plunge into the depths of the sea — your wealth, your goods, your merchandise, your sailors, your navigators, your shipbuilders, your traders, all your soldiers, and every person aboard. The entire crew will sink into the heart of the seas.
- 28The suburbs will shake at the sound of the cry of your pilots.
- 29Every oarsman, every sailor, every navigator on the sea will abandon their ships and stand on the shore.
- 30They will raise their voices and wail bitterly over you. They will throw dust on their heads and roll in ashes.
- 31They will shave their heads in grief for you and put on sackcloth. They will weep over you with anguished hearts and bitter mourning.
- 32In their wailing, they will sing a lament for you and cry out, 'What city was ever like Tyre, destroyed in the middle of the sea?'
- 33When your goods went out across the seas, you satisfied many nations. With your vast wealth and merchandise, you made the kings of the earth rich.
- 34But now the seas have smashed you in the deep waters. Your merchandise and your entire crew have gone down with you.
- 35Everyone living on the coastlands is stunned by what happened to you. Their kings are horrified, their faces twisted with fear.
- 36The merchants among the people will hiss at you; you will be a terror, and you will never exist again.
