- 1The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 2"Son of man, tell the prince of Tyrus, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: Your heart has grown proud, and you've declared, "I am a god! I sit on God's throne in the heart of the seas." But you are only a man, not God — even though you think of yourself as equal to God.
- 3Look, you are wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from you.
- 4Through your wisdom and cleverness you've built up great wealth, filling your treasuries with gold and silver.
- 5By your great wisdom and your trade, you have increased your riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches.
- 6"Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you think of yourself as equal to God,
- 7I will bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and defile your brightness.
- 8They will throw you down into the pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas.
- 9Will you still say 'I am God' to the one who is killing you? You will be a man, not God, in the hands of your slayer.
- 10You will die the deaths of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners. I have spoken it," declares the Lord GOD.
- 11The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 12"Son of man, sing a funeral song over the king of Tyrus. Tell him, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and flawless in beauty.
- 13You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone covered you — sardius, topaz, diamond, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle — all set in gold. The craftsmanship of your tambourines and pipes was built into you on the day you were created.
- 14You were the anointed cherub, appointed to guard and cover. I placed you there myself. You walked on the holy mountain of God, moving among the stones of fire.
- 15You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created until iniquity was found in you.
- 16Your vast trade filled you with violence, and you sinned. Therefore, I cast you as profane out of the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from among the stones of fire.
- 17Your heart grew proud because of your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. So I hurled you to the ground and put you on display before kings for all of them to see.
- 18Through your countless sins and your corrupt trading, you defiled your own sanctuaries. So I brought fire out from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in front of everyone watching.
- 19All those among the nations who knew you will be astonished at you: you shall be a terror, and you will never exist again.
- 20The word of the LORD came to me:
- 21"Son of man, turn and face Zidon, and prophesy against it.
- 22Say, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: I am against you, Zidon, and I will be glorified in your midst. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I carry out my judgments against her and am sanctified in her.
- 23I will send plague into her and blood will flow in her streets. The wounded will be judged in her midst as swords strike from every side. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
- 24"No longer will the people of Israel have to deal with the painful briers and sharp thorns of their scornful neighbors. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD."
- 25This is what the Lord GOD says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, and I am sanctified in them in the sight of the nations, then they will live in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob.
- 26They will live there in safety, building houses and planting vineyards. They will dwell in complete security once I have carried out judgment on all the neighbors who treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God."
