- 1Then he said to me, "Son of man, eat what is in front of you. Eat this scroll, and then go speak to the house of Israel."
- 2So I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll.
- 3He said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll I give you, and fill your insides with it.” Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey.
- 4Then he said to me, "Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak my words to them.
- 5For you are not sent to a people of strange speech and difficult language, but to the house of Israel;
- 6You are not being sent to many people with unfamiliar speech and a hard language whose words you cannot understand. Surely, if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.
- 7But the house of Israel will not listen to you, because they will not listen to me. All the house of Israel are impudent and hard-hearted.
- 8Look, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads.
- 9I've made your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Don't be afraid of them, and don't be shaken by the way they look at you, even though they are a rebellious house.
- 10Then he said to me, "Son of man, take every word I speak to you into your heart and listen with your ears."
- 11Now go to the exiles — your own people — and speak to them. Tell them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says,' whether they listen or refuse to listen."
- 12Then the spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, saying, "Blessed be the glory of the LORD from his place!"
- 13I heard the wings of the living creatures brushing against each other, and the rumble of the wheels beside them — a tremendous roaring sound.
- 14So the spirit lifted me up and took me away. I went in bitterness, in the hot anger of my spirit, but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.
- 15I arrived at Tel Abib, where the exiles lived by the Chebar River. I sat down among them right where they were, and for seven days I stayed there, astonished.
- 16After those 7 days, the word of the LORD came to me:
- 17"Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you must warn them on my behalf.
- 18When I tell a wicked person, “You will surely die,” and you do not warn him or speak to warn the wicked person away from his wicked way so as to save his life, that wicked person will die for his sin, but I will hold you responsible for his blood.
- 19But if you warn the wicked person and he does not turn from his wickedness or his wicked way, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved your own soul.
- 20Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I place a stumbling block before him, he will die. Because you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, but I will hold you responsible for his blood.
- 21However, if you warn that righteous person not to sin, and he listens and doesn't sin, he will certainly live because he accepted the warning — and you will have saved your own soul."
- 22The hand of the LORD came upon me there, and he said, "Get up and go out to the plain. I will speak with you there."
- 23So I got up and went out to the plain, and there stood the glory of the LORD — the same glory I had seen by the Chebar River. I fell facedown on the ground.
- 24Then the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet. It spoke to me and said, "Go, shut yourself inside your house."
- 25As for you, son of man — they will tie you up with ropes and bind you so that you cannot go out among the people.
- 26I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be dumb and not a reprover to them, because they are a rebellious house.
- 27But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth, and you will tell them, “This is what the Lord GOD says.” Let the one who hears hear, and let the one who refuses refuse, for they are a rebellious house.
