- 1"Now, son of man, take a clay tile and set it in front of you. Scratch an image of the city of Jerusalem onto it.
- 2Then lay siege to it — build siege walls around it, pile up an assault ramp against it, set up military camps around it, and position battering rams on every side.
- 3Next, take an iron pan and place it as an iron wall between you and the city. Set your face against it, and it will be besieged, and you will lay siege against it. This will be a sign to the house of Israel.
- 4Also lie on your left side and place the guilt of the house of Israel on it. You will bear their guilt for the number of days you lie on that side.
- 5For I have placed on you the years of their guilt according to the number of the days—390 days. So you will bear the guilt of the house of Israel.
- 6When you have finished those days, lie again on your right side, and you will bear the guilt of the house of Judah for forty days. I have appointed you each day for a year.
- 7Keep your face fixed toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and prophesy against the city.
- 8I will tie you with ropes so you cannot roll from one side to the other until the full number of your siege days is complete."
- 9"Now gather wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt. Mix them all together in a single container and bake bread from them. This is what you will eat during the 390 days you lie on your side.
- 10And the food you shall eat will be measured, twenty shekels a day; you shall eat it from time to time.
- 11Ration your water as well — a sixth of a hin per day — and drink only at set times.
- 12Eat it like barley cakes, and bake it with dung that comes from humans, where everyone can see.
- 13Then the LORD said, 'In this way, the children of Israel will eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles, where I will drive them.'
- 14I cried out, "No, Lord GOD! My soul has never been defiled! From my youth until now, I have never eaten anything that died on its own or was torn apart by wild animals. No unclean meat has ever touched my mouth!"
- 15So he said to me, "Very well — I will let you use cow dung instead of human waste. You may bake your bread over that."
- 16Then he said to me, 'Son of man, look, I will break the staff of bread in Jerusalem. They will eat bread by weight and with care, and they will drink water by measure, with astonishment.'
- 17So that they will lack bread and water, be astonished at one another, and waste away because of their guilt.
