- 1The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 2"Son of man, prophesy and say, 'This is what the Lord GOD declares: Cry out in grief — what a terrible day is coming!'
- 3The day is close — the day of the LORD is near. It will be a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.
- 4A sword will come upon Egypt, and there will be great pain in Ethiopia. When the slain fall in Egypt, her multitude will be taken away, and her foundations will be broken down.
- 5Ethiopia, Libya, Lydia, all the mixed peoples, Chub, and the people of every allied nation will fall by the sword alongside Egypt.
- 6This is what the LORD says: Everyone who supports Egypt will fall, and the pride of her power will collapse. From the tower of Syene, they will fall by the sword, declares the Lord GOD.
- 7Egypt will be left desolate among ruined nations, and her cities will sit empty among devastated cities.
- 8Then they will know that I am the LORD when I set a fire in Egypt and all her helpers are destroyed.
- 9On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to make the Ethiopians who feel safe afraid, and great pain will come upon them, as in the day of Egypt: for, look, it is coming.
- 10This is what the Lord GOD says: I will bring an end to the multitude of Egypt through Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon.
- 11He and his people with him, the fiercest of the nations, will be brought in to destroy the land. They will draw their swords against Egypt and fill the land with the slain.
- 12I will dry up the rivers and hand the land over to wicked men. I will lay waste to everything in it through the hands of foreigners. I, the LORD, have spoken.
- 13This is what the Lord GOD says: I will also destroy the idols and put an end to their images in Noph. There will no longer be a prince of the land of Egypt, and I will spread fear throughout the land.
- 14I will make Pathros a wasteland, set Zoan on fire, and carry out judgment against No.
- 15I will pour out my fury on Sin, the stronghold of Egypt, and I will cut off the multitude of No.
- 16I will set fire in Egypt: Sin will have great pain, and No will be torn apart, and Noph will have distresses daily.
- 17The young men of Aven and Pibeseth will fall by the sword, and the people of these cities will be taken into captivity.
- 18At Tehaphnehes, the day will be darkened when I break the yokes of Egypt there. The pomp of her strength will cease, and a cloud will cover her, and her daughters will go into captivity.
- 19This is how I will carry out judgment on Egypt. Then they will know that I am the LORD."
- 20On the seventh day of the first month, in the eleventh year, the word of the LORD came to me:
- 21Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and look, it will not be bound up to heal, nor will a bandage be applied to make it strong enough to hold the sword.
- 22So this is what the Lord GOD says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt. I will break both his arms — the one still strong and the one already broken — and I will cause the sword to fall out of his hand.
- 23I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them across foreign lands.
- 24At the same time, I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and place my own sword in his hand. But I will break Pharaoh's arms, and he will groan before Babylon's king like a man dying from his wounds.
- 25I will make the king of Babylon's arms strong while Pharaoh's arms go limp. Then everyone will know that I am the LORD — when I put my sword in the hand of Babylon's king and he raises it against the land of Egypt.
- 26I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them across foreign lands. Then they will know that I am the LORD."
