- 1On the 1st day of the 3rd month, in the 11th year, the word of the LORD came to me:
- 2"Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and all his people: 'Who can compare to you in greatness?
- 3Look, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches and with a shading canopy, and of high stature; and its top was among the thick boughs.
- 4The waters made it great, the deep set it up high with its rivers running around its plants, and sent out its streams to all the trees of the field.
- 5Therefore its height was raised above all the trees of the field, and its boughs were multiplied, and its branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when it shot forth.
- 6All the birds of the sky made nests in its boughs, and under its branches all the beasts of the field brought forth their young, and under its shadow lived all great nations.
- 7It was magnificent in its size and the reach of its branches, because its roots were by great waters.
- 8The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it. The fir trees did not have branches like it, and the chestnut trees did not have limbs like it. No tree in the garden of God was as beautiful.
- 9I made it fair with its many branches, so that all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God, envied it.
- 10So this is what the Lord GOD says: 'Because you have grown tall, reaching your top among the thick branches, and your heart is lifted up in your height;
- 11I handed it over to the mightiest ruler among the nations. He dealt with it as it deserved. I drove it out because of its wickedness.
- 12And strangers, the terrible ones of the nations, have cut it down and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in all the valleys, and its boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land. All the people of the earth have moved away from its shadow and abandoned it.
- 13All the birds of the heaven will stay on its ruin, and all the beasts of the field will be on its branches.
- 14So that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, nor shoot up their top among the thick boughs, nor do their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered to death, to the lower parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with those who go down to the pit.
- 15The Lord GOD says: 'On the day it went down to the grave, I caused mourning. I covered the deep for it, held back the floods, and the great waters stopped. I caused Lebanon to mourn for it, and all the trees of the field fainted for it.
- 16I made the nations tremble at the sound of his fall when I cast him down to hell with those who descend into the pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the finest and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the depths of the earth.
- 17They also went down into hell with him to those who were slain by the sword; and those who were his arm, who lived under his shadow among the heathen.
- 18To whom are you comparable in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the lower parts of the earth. You will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.
