- 1The word of the LORD came to me:
- 2"Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and tell them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says to the shepherds: How terrible it will be for the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Aren't shepherds supposed to take care of the flock?'
- 3You eat the fat, you dress yourselves in wool, and you slaughter the fattened animals, but you don't feed the flock.
- 4You haven't strengthened the weak. You haven't healed the sick. You haven't bandaged the injured. You haven't gone after the strays or searched for the lost. Instead, you've ruled over them with brute force and cruelty.
- 5And they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and they became prey for all the wild animals when they were scattered.
- 6My sheep wandered across every mountain and every high hill. They were scattered over the whole face of the earth, and no one searched or looked for them.
- 7"So listen, you shepherds — hear the word of the LORD:
- 8"As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "because my flock became prey and my flock became food for every wild animal, because there was no shepherd, and my shepherds did not search for my flock, but instead the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed my flock;
- 9therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
- 10This is what the Lord GOD says: I am against the shepherds. I will hold them accountable for my flock and stop them from feeding the flock. The shepherds will no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my flock from their mouths so they will not be food for them.
- 11"For this is what the Lord GOD says: I myself — yes, I personally — will search for my sheep and find them.
- 12Just as a shepherd searches for his scattered flock when he finds himself among them, I will search for my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered on that dark and cloudy day.
- 13I will bring them out from among the nations and gather them from foreign countries. I will bring them back to their own land and feed them on the mountains of Israel, beside the streams, and in every inhabited place throughout the country.
- 14I will feed them in a good pasture, and their grazing land will be on the high mountains of Israel. There they will lie in a good fold and feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
- 15I will feed my flock and make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD.
- 16I will search for the lost and bring back those who were driven away. I will bandage the injured and strengthen the sick. But I will destroy the fat and strong; I will feed them with judgment.
- 17"As for you, my flock, this is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to judge between one sheep and another — between the rams and the male goats.
- 18Isn't it enough for you to graze on the best pasture? Do you also have to trample the rest of it with your feet? Isn't it enough to drink the clear water? Do you also have to muddy what's left with your feet?
- 19My sheep are forced to eat what you've trampled and drink what you've muddied with your feet."
- 20"So this is what the Lord GOD says to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the thin sheep.
- 21You shove with your sides and shoulders, and you ram the weak ones with your horns until you've driven them away.
- 22Therefore I will rescue my flock, and they will no longer be prey. I will judge between one sheep and another.
- 23I will place one shepherd over them — my servant David — and he will feed them. He will care for them and be their shepherd.
- 24I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David will be a prince among them. I, the LORD, have spoken.
- 25"I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of dangerous animals. They will live safely in the wilderness and sleep securely in the forests.
- 26I will bless them and the land surrounding my hill. I will send rain in its proper season — showers of blessing.
- 27The trees will bear fruit, and the ground will produce its crops. My people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the LORD when I break the chains of their yoke and free them from those who enslaved them.
- 28They will never again be plundered by the nations, and wild animals will no longer devour them. They will live in safety, and no one will make them afraid.
- 29I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they will no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, nor bear the shame of the heathen anymore.
- 30Then they will know that I, the LORD their God, am with them, and that they — the house of Israel — are my people," declares the Lord GOD.
- 31You are my flock, the flock of my pasture, and you are men. I am your God, says the Lord GOD.
