- 1The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the middle of a valley that was full of bones.
- 2He led me back and forth among them, and I saw that there were an enormous number of bones scattered across the open valley. They were completely dried out.
- 3He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" I answered, "O Lord GOD, you know."
- 4Again he said to me, 'Prophesy over these bones and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.'
- 5This is what the Lord GOD says to these bones: 'I am going to put breath into you, and you will live.
- 6I will lay tendons upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you will live; and you will know that I am the LORD.
- 7So I prophesied as I was commanded. As I spoke, there was a rattling sound and a shaking, and the bones began coming together — each bone connecting to its matching bone.
- 8As I watched, tendons appeared on them, then flesh grew over them, and skin covered them completely. But there was still no breath in them.
- 9Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the wind, son of man! Say to it: 'This is what the Lord GOD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain bodies so they may live!'"
- 10So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them. They came alive and stood up on their feet — a vast, enormous army.
- 11Then he said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look, they say, 'Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off completely.'"
- 12So prophesy and tell them: 'This is what the Lord GOD says: My people, I am going to open your graves and raise you out of them, and I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
- 13You will know that I am the LORD when I open your graves and bring you up out of them, my people.
- 14I will put my spirit in you, and you will live. I will settle you back in your own land, and you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken it and done it," declares the LORD.
- 15The word of the LORD came to me again:
- 16"Son of man, take a stick and write on it: 'For Judah and the Israelites allied with him.' Then take another stick and write on it: 'For Joseph — the stick of Ephraim — and all the Israelites allied with him.'
- 17Now join them together into a single stick so that they become one in your hand.
- 18When your people ask you, 'Won't you explain what you mean by this?'
- 19tell them: 'This is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to take Joseph's stick, which is in Ephraim's hand, along with the Israelite tribes allied with him, and join it to Judah's stick. I will make them into one stick, and they will be one in my hand.'
- 20Hold up the sticks you've written on so the people can see them.
- 21And say to them, "This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I will take the children of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land."
- 22I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. One king will rule over all of them. They will never again be two nations, and they will never again be divided into two kingdoms.
- 23They will no longer defile themselves with their idols, their detestable things, or any of their transgressions. I will rescue them from all their dwellingplaces where they have sinned and will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.
- 24My servant David will be their king, and they will all have one shepherd. They will walk in my judgments, observe my statutes, and carry them out.
- 25They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, where their ancestors lived. They, their children, and their children's children will live there forever, and my servant David will be their prince forever.
- 26I will make a covenant of peace with them — an everlasting covenant. I will establish them, increase their numbers, and place my sanctuary among them forever.
- 27My dwelling place will be with them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
- 28The nations will know that I the LORD make Israel holy when my sanctuary is in the middle of them forever.
