  1. 1"Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel. Say to them: Mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the LORD!
  2. 2This is what the Lord GOD says: Because the enemy has spoken against you, saying, 'Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession,'
  3. 3So prophesy and say: This is what the Lord GOD says: They devastated you and swallowed you up from every direction so that the surrounding nations could claim you as their own. You became the subject of gossip and slander among the peoples.
  4. 4So listen, mountains of Israel, to the word of the Lord GOD. The Lord GOD says this to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and abandoned cities that have become plunder and a joke to the surrounding nations:
  5. 5Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: In the fire of my jealousy, I have spoken against the rest of the nations and against all of Edom, who have taken my land for themselves with joyful hearts and spiteful minds, treating it as something to plunder.
  6. 6So prophesy about the land of Israel. Tell the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys: This is what the Lord GOD says: I have spoken in my jealousy and fury because you have endured the mockery of the nations.
  7. 7Therefore the Lord GOD says: I have sworn an oath — the nations surrounding you will be the ones who bear their own shame.
  8. 8But you, mountains of Israel, will grow new branches and produce fruit for my people Israel, because they are coming home soon.
  9. 9I am on your side. I will turn my attention to you, and you will be plowed and planted again.
  10. 10I will fill you with people — all of the house of Israel, every last one. The cities will be lived in again, and the ruins will be rebuilt.
  11. 11I will multiply both people and livestock on you. They will grow and be fruitful. I will resettle you as you were before, and I will make things even better for you than they were in the beginning. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
  12. 12Yes, I will cause men to walk upon you—my people Israel. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance, and you will no longer deprive them of their children.
  13. 13This is what the Lord GOD says: People say about you, 'You land that devours people and bereaves your nations.'
  14. 14Therefore, you will no longer devour people or bereave your nations, says the Lord GOD.
  15. 15"I will make sure you never again hear the taunts of the nations. You will no longer suffer the insults of other peoples, and you will never again cause your nation to stumble," declares the Lord GOD."
  16. 16The word of the LORD came to me again:
  17. 17Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they made it unclean by their ways and actions. Their behavior was before me like the uncleanness of a woman during her menstrual period.
  18. 18So I poured out my fury on them — because of the blood they had spilled on the land and because they had polluted it with their idols.
  19. 19I scattered them among the nations and dispersed them across foreign lands. I judged them according to how they had lived and what they had done.
  20. 20But wherever they went among the nations, they brought disgrace to my holy name. People would say, 'These are the LORD's people, and yet they had to leave his land.'
  21. 21But I had pity for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.
  22. 22So tell the house of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says: I'm not doing this for your sake, house of Israel, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have disgraced among the nations wherever you went.
  23. 23I will make my great name holy, which was profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in the middle of them. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD, when I am made holy in you before their eyes.
  24. 24I will take you out of the nations, gather you from every country, and bring you back to your own land.
  25. 25I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will wash away all your filth and purify you from all your idols.
  26. 26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit inside you. I will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh.
  27. 27I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes. You will keep my judgments and do them.
  28. 28You will live in the land I gave to your ancestors. You will be my people, and I will be your God.
  29. 29I will save you from everything that made you unclean. I will command the grain to grow abundantly and never again send famine against you.
  30. 30I will make the trees bear more fruit and the fields produce bigger harvests, so you will never again be humiliated by famine among the nations.
  31. 31Then you will remember your evil ways and your actions that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.
  32. 32I want you to understand — I'm not doing this for your sake," declares the Lord GOD. "Be ashamed and humiliated by the way you have lived, house of Israel."
  33. 33This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will resettle your cities and rebuild the ruins.
  34. 34The land that lay desolate will be farmed again, instead of sitting empty for every passerby to see.
  35. 35People will say, 'This land that was a wasteland has become like the garden of Eden! The cities that were ruined, desolate, and destroyed are now fortified and full of people.'
  36. 36Then the nations still around you will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt what was ruined and replanted what was desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it."
  37. 37This is what the Lord GOD says: "I will also let the house of Israel ask me to do this for them: I will multiply their people like a flock.
  38. 38Like the holy flocks, as the flocks of Jerusalem during her solemn feasts, so the ruined cities will be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
