- 1On the 5th day of the 6th month, in the 6th year, I was sitting in my house with the elders of Judah gathered in front of me. Suddenly the hand of the Lord GOD came upon me.
- 2I looked and saw a figure that appeared like fire — from the waist down, blazing flame, and from the waist up, brilliant radiance like glowing amber.
- 3He reached out what looked like a hand and grabbed me by a lock of my hair. The spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven and brought me in visions from God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the inner gate facing north, where the image of jealousy stood, which provokes jealousy.
- 4Right there before me was the glory of the God of Israel, just as I had seen it in my vision on the plain.
- 5He said to me, "Son of man, look toward the north." So I looked, and there at the north side of the altar gate, right in the entrance, stood this idol of jealousy.
- 6Then he said to me, 'Son of man, do you see what they are doing? The great abominations that the house of Israel commits here are such that I should go far from my sanctuary. But turn again, and you will see even greater abominations.'
- 7He brought me to the entrance of the courtyard, and when I looked, I noticed a hole in the wall.
- 8He told me, "Son of man, dig into the wall." So I dug into it and uncovered a doorway.
- 9He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and disgusting things they are doing here.”
- 10So I went in and looked around, and there were images of every kind of crawling creature, abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, depicted on the walls all around.
- 11Standing in front of these images were 70 elders of Israel, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan among them. Each man held a censer in his hand, and a thick cloud of incense rose into the air.
- 12He said to me, "Son of man, do you see what the elders of Israel are doing in the dark, each one in his room of images? They say, 'The LORD doesn't see us; the LORD has abandoned the earth.'"
- 13He said to me, 'Turn again, and you will see greater abominations that they do.'
- 14He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the LORD's house, and there I saw women sitting and weeping for Tammuz.
- 15He asked me, "Do you see this, son of man? Keep watching — you'll see abominations even worse than these."
- 16Then he brought me into the inner court of the LORD's house. There, between the porch and the altar, at the very entrance to the LORD's temple, stood about 25 men. Their backs were turned to the LORD's temple and their faces pointed east — they were bowing down and worshiping the sun.
- 17He said to me, "Do you see this, son of man? Is it a small thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they do here? They have filled the land with violence and have returned to provoke me to anger. Look, they put the branch to their nose."
- 18So I will act in fury. My eye will not spare them, nor will I have pity. Even if they cry out to me with a loud voice, I will not listen to them.
