- 1Then he shouted in my ears with a loud voice, "Bring near those who have charge over the city, each man with his weapon of destruction in his hand!"
- 2I looked, and six men came from the direction of the upper gate that faces north, each carrying a weapon for slaughter. Among them was a man dressed in linen with a scribe’s writing kit at his side. They entered and stood beside the bronze altar.
- 3The glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the house. Then he called to the man dressed in linen who had the scribe’s writing kit at his side.
- 4The LORD told him, "Go through the city — all through Jerusalem — and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who grieve and mourn over the disgusting things being done there."
- 5Then to the others, he said within my hearing, "Follow him through the city and strike. Show no mercy and have no pity.
- 6Kill them all — old men, young men, young women, children, and women — but don't touch anyone who has the mark. Start at my sanctuary." So they began with the elders who were standing in front of the temple.
- 7He told them, "Defile the temple and fill its courtyards with the dead. Go!" So they went out and began killing throughout the city.
- 8While they were carrying out the slaughter, I was left alone. I fell facedown and cried out, "Oh, Lord GOD! Are you going to destroy everyone left in Israel by pouring out your fury on Jerusalem?"
- 9He said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is extremely great. The land is full of blood, and the city is full of corruption, because they say, ‘The LORD has abandoned the earth, and the LORD does not see.’”
- 10As for me also, my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity, but I will repay their ways upon their heads.
- 11Then the man dressed in linen, the one with the writing kit at his side, came back and reported, "I have done everything you commanded me to do."
