  1. 1On the 1st day of the 6th month, during the 2nd year of King Darius's reign, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest.
  2. 2The LORD of hosts says this: "These people keep saying, 'The time hasn't come yet to rebuild the LORD's house.'"
  3. 3Then the word of the LORD came again through the prophet Haggai:
  4. 4Is it time for you to live in your paneled houses while this house lies in ruins?
  5. 5So the LORD of hosts says this: Consider your ways.
  6. 6You've planted plenty of seed but harvested almost nothing. You eat, but you're never full. You drink, but you're still thirsty. You put on clothes, but you can't get warm. And whoever earns wages is putting them into a bag with holes.
  7. 7The LORD of hosts says: "Consider your ways."
  8. 8Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house; then I will take pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD.
  9. 9You expected much, but it turned out to be little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the LORD of hosts. Because my house is in ruins, while each of you runs to his own house.
  10. 10"That's why the heavens above you have held back their dew, and the earth has held back its crops."
  11. 11"I called down a drought on the land and the mountains — on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and everything the ground produces — on people, livestock, and everything your hands have worked for."
  12. 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Josedech the high priest, along with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. The people feared the LORD.
  13. 13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people: "I am with you," declares the LORD.
  14. 14The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God.
  15. 15This was on the 24th day of the 6th month, in the 2nd year of King Darius's reign.
