  1. 1On the 21st day of the 7th month, the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai:
  2. 2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the rest of the people, saying:
  3. 3'Is anyone still alive among you who remembers this temple in its original glory? Look at it now — compared to what it was, doesn't it seem like nothing?'
  4. 4"But take courage, Zerubbabel," says the LORD. "Take courage, Joshua son of Josedech, high priest. Take courage, all you people of the land," says the LORD. "Get to work, because I am with you," declares the LORD of hosts.
  5. 5According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, my spirit remains among you. Do not be afraid.
  6. 6The LORD of hosts says this: 'Yet once, in a little while, I will shake the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land.'
  7. 7I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come. I will fill this house with glory," says the LORD of hosts.
  8. 8"All the silver is mine, and all the gold is mine," declares the LORD of hosts.
  9. 9The glory of this latter house will be greater than that of the former one, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, says the LORD of hosts.
  10. 10On the 24th day of the 9th month, during the 2nd year of King Darius, the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai:
  11. 11The LORD of hosts says: "Ask the priests to rule on this question of the law:
  12. 12If someone is carrying holy meat in the fold of his garment, and that fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that food become holy?" The priests answered, "No."
  13. 13Then Haggai asked, "What if someone who has become unclean by touching a dead body then touches any of these things — does it become unclean?" The priests answered, "Yes, it becomes unclean."
  14. 14Haggai responded, "That's exactly how it is with this people and this nation before me," says the LORD. "Everything they do and everything they offer here is unclean."
  15. 15"Now think carefully about what life was like before this day — before a single stone was placed on another in the LORD's temple.
  16. 16Back then, when someone went to a grain pile expecting 20 measures, there were only 10. When someone went to the wine vat expecting to draw out 50 measures, there were only 20.
  17. 17I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you did not turn to me, says the LORD.
  18. 18"Think carefully about what happens from this day forward — from this 24th day of the 9th month, the very day the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid. Pay attention to this:
  19. 19Is the seed still in the barn? Indeed, the grapevine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. From this day on, I will bless you.
  20. 20The LORD spoke to Haggai a second time on the 24th day of that month:
  21. 21Tell Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, that I will shake the heavens and the earth.
  22. 22I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen. I will overturn the chariots and those who ride in them; the horses and their riders will fall, every one by the sword of his brother.
  23. 23On that day," declares the LORD of hosts, "I will take you, Zerubbabel my servant, son of Shealtiel," says the LORD, "and I will make you like a signet ring — because I have chosen you," declares the LORD of hosts.
