- 1When I would heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim and the wickedness of Samaria were uncovered. For they commit falsehood. The thief comes in, and the troop of robbers plunders outside.
- 2It never crosses their minds that I remember every wicked thing they've done. Their sins have piled up all around them — I see it all right in front of me.
- 3Their wickedness delights the king, and their lies entertain the princes.
- 4They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by the baker, who stops stirring the fire after he has kneaded the dough, until it is leavened.
- 5On the day of our king, the princes made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.
- 6For they have prepared their hearts like an oven while they lie in wait; their baker sleeps all night, and in the morning it burns like a flaming fire.
- 7They all burn hot as an oven and consume their own leaders. Their kings have fallen one after another, yet not one of them calls out to me.
- 8Ephraim has mixed himself with the surrounding nations; Ephraim is like a flatbread not turned.
- 9Foreigners have drained his strength, but he doesn't even realize it. Gray hairs are spreading across his head, but he doesn't notice.
- 10Israel's arrogance testifies to his face, and for all this they do not return to the LORD their God or seek him.
- 11Ephraim is like a foolish dove with no sense — calling out to Egypt for help one moment, then running to Assyria the next.
- 12When they go, I will spread my net over them. I will bring them down like birds of the sky. I will discipline them as their congregation has heard.
- 13Woe to them, for they have fled from me! Destruction is upon them, because they have transgressed against me. Though I have redeemed them, they have spoken lies against me.
- 14They don't cry out to me from their hearts — they just wail on their beds. They gather together begging for grain and wine, but they turn their backs on me.
- 15I trained them and made their arms strong, yet they plot evil against me.
- 16They turn, but not to the Most High. They are like a deceitful bow. Their princes will fall by the sword because of the rage of their tongue. This will be their derision in the land of Egypt.
