- 1Do not rejoice with joy, Israel, as the peoples do. For you have prostituted yourself away from your God; you have loved a reward on every threshing floor.
- 2The threshing floors and winepresses won't produce enough to feed them, and the new wine will run dry.
- 3They won't stay in the LORD's land. Ephraim will go back to Egypt, and they'll eat unclean food in Assyria.
- 4They won't pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and nothing they offer will please him. Their sacrifices will be like the bread of mourners—everyone who eats it becomes unclean. Their bread for their soul will not come into the house of the LORD.
- 5What will you do when the sacred festivals come? What will you do on the feast days of the LORD?
- 6Look — they're fleeing from destruction, but Egypt will round them up and Memphis will bury them. Weeds will overtake the places where they stored their silver treasures, and thorns will grow in their tents.
- 7The days of punishment have come, the days of payback have arrived; Israel will know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, because of your many sins and great hostility.
- 8The watchman of Ephraim was with my God, but the prophet is like a trap set by a hunter in all his ways, and there is hatred in the house of his God.
- 9They've sunk deep into corruption, just like in the days of Gibeah. God will remember their guilt and punish them for their sins.
- 10I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers like the first ripe fruit on the fig tree at its first season. They went to Baal Peor and separated themselves to shame, and their abominations were according to what they loved.
- 11Ephraim's glory will fly away like a bird, from birth, from the womb, and from conception.
- 12Even if they raise children, I will take them away until no one is left. Woe to them when I depart from them!
- 13I once saw Ephraim planted in a beautiful place, like Tyre. But now Ephraim will lead his own children out to be slaughtered.
- 14Give them, LORD — what should you give them? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that have no milk.
- 15All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them. Because of their evil actions, I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more. All their leaders are rebels.
- 16Ephraim is struck down. Their roots have dried up, and they'll produce no fruit. Even if they do have children, I will kill the ones they love most.
- 17My God will reject them because they refused to listen to him, and they'll become wanderers among the nations.
