  1. 1Israel is an empty vine, producing fruit only for itself. The more fruit it produced, the more altars it built; the better the land, the more they made goodly images.
  2. 2Their heart is divided; now they will be found guilty. He will break down their altars and destroy their images.
  3. 3For now they will say, 'We have no king, because we did not fear the LORD; what then should a king do to us?'
  4. 4They make empty promises, swearing false oaths when they make covenants. So judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a plowed field.
  5. 5The people of Samaria will fear because of the calves of Beth Aven. The people will mourn over it, and the priests who once rejoiced over it will mourn for its glory, because it has departed from it.
  6. 6It will also be carried to Assyria as a gift for King Jareb. Ephraim will be humiliated, and Israel will be ashamed of his own counsel.
  7. 7Samaria's king will be swept away like foam on the surface of water.
  8. 8The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed. Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars, and they will say to the mountains, 'Cover us,' and to the hills, 'Fall on us.'
  9. 9Israel, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah. There they stood. The battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.
  10. 10When I choose, I will punish them; and the people will gather against them when they bind themselves in their two furrows.
  11. 11Ephraim was like a trained young cow that loved the easy work of threshing grain. But I will place a yoke on her beautiful neck. I will harness Ephraim for hard labor. Judah must plow, and Jacob must break up the soil.
  12. 12Sow to yourselves in righteousness, and reap in mercy. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and rains righteousness upon you.
  13. 13You have plowed wickedness and harvested wrongdoing. You have eaten the fruit of lies because you trusted in your own way and in your many mighty men.
  14. 14Therefore a tumult will rise among your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed — just as Shalman destroyed Beth Arbel on the day of battle, when the mother was dashed to pieces upon her children.
  15. 15So Bethel will do this to you because of your great wickedness: in a single morning, the king of Israel will be utterly cut off.
