- 1Look! The LORD is about to devastate the earth. He will lay it waste, turn it upside down, and scatter its people in every direction.
- 2It will be the same for the people and the priest; the servant and his master; the maid and her mistress; the buyer and the seller; the lender and the borrower; the one who charges interest and the one who pays it.
- 3The earth will be completely emptied and thoroughly plundered. The LORD himself has spoken it.
- 4The earth mourns and fades away, the world grows weak and fades away, and the proud people of the earth waste away.
- 5The earth is polluted by its inhabitants because they have broken the laws, changed the ordinance, and shattered the everlasting covenant.
- 6Therefore, the curse has devoured the earth, and the people living there are devastated. The inhabitants of the earth are burned, and only a few people remain.
- 7The new wine mourns, the vine withers, and all the merryhearted sigh.
- 8The joyful sound of tambourines has stopped. The noise of celebration has ended. The music of the harp has gone silent.
- 9No one drinks wine with singing anymore. Even strong drink tastes bitter to those who drink it.
- 10The ruined city lies shattered. Every house is boarded shut, and no one goes in.
- 11People cry out in the streets because the wine is gone. All joy has turned to darkness. Every trace of happiness has vanished from the land.
- 12The city is left in ruins, and its gates are smashed to pieces.
- 13When this happens throughout the land among the people, it will be like the shaking of an olive tree, like the gleaning of grapes when the vintage is done.
- 14They will lift up their voices and sing for the majesty of the LORD; they will cry aloud from the sea.
- 15Therefore glorify the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the islands of the sea.
- 16From the farthest corners of the earth we hear songs: "Glory to the Righteous One!" But I said, "I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! How terrible for me!" The traitors keep betraying. Over and over, the treacherous deal in treachery.
- 17Terror, the pit, and the snare are waiting for you, people of the earth.
- 18Whoever runs from the sound of terror will fall into the pit. Whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare. The floodgates of heaven are thrown open, and the foundations of the earth are shaking.
- 19The earth is completely shattered. The earth is split apart. The earth is violently shaken.
- 20The earth will reel back and forth like a drunkard, and will be removed like a hut; and its transgression will be heavy on it; and it will fall, and not rise again.
- 21On that day, the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below.
- 22They will be gathered like prisoners in a pit and shut up in prison. After many days they will be visited.
- 23Then the moon will be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
