- 1On that day, this song will be sung throughout the land of Judah: "We have a strong city! God himself has set up salvation as our walls and defenses.
- 2Open the gates so that the righteous nation, which keeps the truth, may enter.
- 3You will keep in perfect peace everyone whose mind is fixed on you, because they trust in you.
- 4Trust in the LORD forever, for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.
- 5For he brings down those who dwell on high; the lofty city, he lays it low; he lays it low, even to the ground; he brings it even to the dust.
- 6Now the poor trample over it; the feet of the needy walk where it once stood."
- 7The way of the just is uprightness: you, most upright, weigh the path of the just.
- 8Yes, LORD, we have waited for you along the path of your justice. Our soul longs for your name and for the memory of who you are.
- 9With my soul, I have desired you in the night; yes, with my spirit within me, I will seek you early. For when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
- 10Let favor be shown to the wicked, yet he will not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly, and will not see the majesty of the LORD.
- 11LORD, when your hand is lifted up, they will not see it, but they will see and be ashamed for their envy of the people. Yes, the fire of your enemies will devour them.
- 12LORD, you will establish peace for us, because everything we have accomplished, you have done through us.
- 13LORD our God, other rulers have lorded over us, but you alone are the one we honor — only your name will be on our lips.
- 14They are dead and will not live; they are deceased and will not rise. Therefore, you have visited and destroyed them, erasing all memory of them.
- 15You have grown the nation, LORD — you have grown the nation! You are glorified! You have pushed its borders to the far ends of the earth.
- 16LORD, in their distress they turned to you; when your discipline was upon them, they poured out a prayer.
- 17Like a pregnant woman near the time of her delivery who writhes and cries out in her labor pains — so we have been in your sight, O LORD.
- 18We have been with child, we have been in pain, but we have given birth to nothing but wind. We have not brought any deliverance to the earth, nor have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
- 19Your dead men will live; together with my dead body they will arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust, for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth will cast out the dead.
- 20Come, my people, go into your rooms and shut the doors behind you. Hide yourselves for just a little while until the fury has passed.
- 21For look, the LORD is coming out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also will disclose her blood, and will no more cover her slain.
